Today started out like any other day, my father and I ate breakfast before he went off to study his books. The only strange thing was that after he went off to his books, a dark cloud fell over the island that we live on. The wind began to pick up and the waves became massive. I watched the fancy looking ship off shore being tossed around like a measly twig by the monstrous seas. The ship was completely out of control. The sails were ripping as the crew tried to pull them in and then let them out again. I could hear men yelling, but I couldn’t make out what they were saying. I saw someone jump off the boat and moments later the boat crashed and wooden splints flew in every direction. I think my father cast a spell upon the sea to make the horrible storm. These poor men! I’m so frightened. My father probably killed them! I can’t believe this. I can’t believe that my own father would kill these strangers. Why would he create this storm? Why does he want to hurt these people? I don’t understand. Can’t he see the danger this is causing?
When my father finally appeared at my side I began to share my concerns about the people on the boat and my suspicions that he was the cause of the storm He told me to calm down and that no harm was done! How could he say that when such an awful thing has happened? After he reassured me that no harm was done, he began to tell me who I am and where I came from. He told me that 12 years ago he was the Duke of Milan and I was a princess. He proceeded to tell me that his evil brother Antonio kicked us out and is now the Duke of Malian. The only reason my father didn’t stop him was because he was so wrapped up in his books that by the time he noticed it was too late. We were chased from our home by the king’s army. My father and I, along with his books and basic necessities, were wisped away onto crappy boat and, by luck, we came upon this island. My father also informed me that the King of Naples was bribed by Antonio to send his army. After he told me this story I only had one question remaining for him. Why did he create the storm? He told me it was fate and forbid me from asking anymore questions. After this story I became very sleepy and I fell asleep. When I awake my father decides it is time to visit Caliban. Caliban began to argue with my father. I taught Caliban words and language and this is how he repays us! Now the only thing he thanks me for are the curses he has learned. Soon after Caliban leaves my father and I hear a strange noise. When I look to see that it is I see an extremely handsome man. He must be a spirit because no man can possibly be that attractive. My father did not agree with me, instead he told me that the man is from the shipwreck. Shortly after spotting him the handsome man sees me. The man tells my father and me that he is now the King of Naples. Unfortunately my father is making a fool of himself and of me because he keeps mumbling to himself like a crazy man. My father keeps testing the man and I don’t understand why.
I can’t stop thinking about the man my father and I met. He’s so dreamy and cute! I wonder if he likes me. I know I like him…I might even love him. He said he was a king too! Wow.
My father made this handsome man carry and stack wood all day. It breaks my heart to see his working and I can not do anything about it. When I offered to help, he refused my help. He’s such a gentleman. His name is Ferdinand. His attractiveness distracted me and I accidentally told him my name. My father will be so disappointed in me. I told him I love him and he said he loves me too! When I asked him if he wanted to be my husband, he said yes! I’m so excited!
My father gave Ferdinand his blessing today! I’m so glad that he is happy for us. My father has been so good to me. He told my love that all the trouble he has put poor Ferdinand through has been a test of his love for me. The only thing my father asks of us is that we do not have sex before our wedding ceremony. If we don’t obey his request the gods will become angry with us and curse our marriage. I think we can manage this request. Oh, but I do love him so much. Suddenly, three spirits appeared and started talking to Ferdinand and me. They celebrated our plans for marriage and gave us a gift. They gave us the gift of fertility and prosperousness. The spirits were so beautiful! Everything was so magical. I couldn’t be more excited and happy. I wish life could always be this spectacular. All of the sudden, nymphs come up from the ground and begin to dance! It was wonderful! I wish I could have nymphs dance at every special occasion. Maybe when Ferdinand and I are King and Queen we can host many celebrations and invite the dancing nymphs to come. Out of nowhere, my father becomes very angry and the spirits and nymphs disappear. My father speaks to my dear Ferdinand about his frustration. He continues to say that all that Ferdinand has imagined for the two of us will no longer take place. I don’t understand what he means. How would my father even know what Ferdinand has imagined? Did Ferdinand tell me father his thoughts? Finally, we bid my father farewell and retire to his room to rest.
Later that day, Ferdinand and I are playing chess. I think he is cheating though, but he denies it. Suddenly, we are with my father and Ferdinand’s father. I’ve never met this man before, but he seems very nice. When Ferdinand introduces me to his father he makes me sound like his last resort. I thought I loved him and he loved me. Was I wrong? Who does he think he is? I’m Miranda! I’m a princess! I deserve better than that. As I look around, I notice we are surrounded by many fine looking men. I’ve never seen so many men before. They’re quite attractive! Maybe I can use one of them to get back at Ferdinand or maybe I will simply replace Ferdinand with one of these fine fellows.
